LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – As the Mercado family was getting ready to celebrate Lucca’s seventh birthday, his parents were surprised when he came up with an idea.
Instead of receiving gifts at his birthday, Lucca asked all of his guests to make a donation to the St. Jude’s Children’s hospital.
The seven-year-old collected 12-hundred dollars and sent the money straight to St. Jude’s.
Sister Rosanne Ruiz says the gesture made an impact on Lucca’s fellow students at Mary Help of Christians School.
She says Lucca’s actions inspired his classmates to start several fundraisers of their own, which raised an additional $500.
Lucca’s mom says after the donation, he was surprised to receive a gift from St. Jude’s with a special message.
The letter read, “Lucca, thank you for supporting the kids of St. Jude. Your support helps children from around the world receive treatment at no cost. Have a wonderful year, your friends at St. Jude”.
Lucca’s family has donated to St. Jude’s in the past, and that’s how the young boy knew about the organization.
His mother says her and Lucca’s dad are very proud of their son.
Those who attended the party were equally impressed with the boy’s generosity.
